Interfaith leader Eboo Patel’s newest book is called simply: We Need to Build. The underlying premise is that democracy requires doing, building… that it takes intention and action to build community around shared values, and to sustain it.
This morning begins a new monthly theme at UUSGS. The name is awkward: humans, naturally (building on “human nature”). Or, if you prefer: humans being (as opposed to human beings). The gist is the same: can we ever adequately describe human nature by looking only at individuals… without also looking at community, at our social & biological relationships to one another?
We begin this pluralistic focus with a ritual. Community is about building trust. Re-building it, when necessary. As destruction & creation are interwoven, we’ll kindle a cleansing fire… and then we’ll build.
