DESCRIPTION:\n“Democracy is not about majorities winning and minorities l
osing\; it’s supposed to be a system in which each of us take responsibi
 lity for our common welfare. . . . What makes us a  people\, ultimately\,
is our everyday commitment to… a common life together.” — Kwame Ant
hony Appiah\n\nInterfaith leader Eboo Patel’s newest book is called simp
ly: We Need to Build. The underlying premise is that democracy requires do
ing\, building… that it takes intention and action to build community ar
ound shared values\, and to sustain it.\nThis morning begins a new monthly
theme at UUSGS. The name is awkward: humans\, naturally (building on “h
uman nature”). Or\, if you prefer: humans being (as opposed to human bei
ngs). The gist is the same: can we ever adequately describe human nature b
y looking only at individuals… without also looking at community\, at ou
r social &amp\; biological relationships to one another?\nWe begin this pl
uralistic focus with a ritual. Community is about building trust.  Re-bui
lding it\, when necessary.  As destruction &amp\; creation are interwoven
 \, we’ll kindle a cleansing fire… and then we’ll build.  \n--------
