"Love is the spirit of this congregation..."
Checking out a new community is a courageous choice!

We invite you to be curious here.
When the time is right, we would love to know you and welcome you.
In the meantime, here are some questions we often here from newcomers:

What exactly is Unitarian Universalism?
What do UU's believe?

These questions may sound the same, but they are actually quite different.  Because while most folks assume that religion is all about belief (ortho-doxy, meaning right belief), that is not how we understand ourselves.  UU's can have many different beliefs, and those beliefs may change over time.  UU communities may contain theists (who believe in God) and athiests, as well as just about every kind of curious free-thinker.  While we won't all believe the same thing, what is consistent is a centering emphasis on love and right relationship (and justice, or "what love looks like in public") and a sincere desire to join with others in the kind of community that nurtures open-minded spiritual growth and connection.  Truly, we need not think alike to love alike.

Know God? Or no God?
Do Unitarian Universalists (UU's) believe in God?

Sure, some do.  Some don't.  Many are agnostic or undecided.  Some call God "Love".  Some prefer different language.  While forms and names may differ, we can all generally agree that there is a sacred dimension to life, something we are called to celebrate and protect in each other, in Nature, and in moments of meaning.  What does the sacred look like to you... within yourself, among those around you, and beyond?

Is UUSGS a "church"?
What are Sunday services like?

If you've ever been to a church service before, you may recognize some elements.  But we also do things differently!  And while some call what we do "church" (because that is common language for many), others do not.  Regardless of what you call it, Sunday mornings are rooted in spiritual practice ("finding and keeping your balance") and celebration.  Sunday services usually begin with a welcome and a song, then we collect an Offering (which is usually given away to partner organizations), then an Embracing Meditation and some silence, then a message (either spoken or in ritual or music -- for more on our theme-based approach, click here), and then a closing song.  Services are usually 45-60 minutes. Community time (aka, social hour) usually follows.

"We are Unitarian Universalists"

UUSGS is a member of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), a free and democratic community of over 1000 independent congregations. Here is a short video produced by the UUA:
What about children?
I'm looking for an open-minded place to raise kind kids.

Religious education and family ministry programming occurs primarily alongside our Sunday services.  Children gather in cohorts to explore similar themes as adults, only in age-appropriate ways.  Beyond Sundays, there are often times to conenct with other families via outings, mixers, and more.  Darcie Farber is the staff lead; she is supported by a team of engaged volunteers.  If you arrive a few minutes early, we would be happy to greet you at our Welcome Table to get you and yours situated.  For more information about our approach, browse on over to "Programs" and/or check out the News section for the latest goings-on.

OK. I'm going to check it out. What do I wear?
And where do I park?

We encourage you to wear what feels right.  Dress comfortably.  Some folks choose to dress up, but most folks dress casually on Sundays.

Parking is available in the upper lot.  Overflow parking is available on the street.  On-grade parking and entry is avialable in the lower lot (closer to Dickinson than Converse).  We'd be happy to help you get settled, esepcially if you let us know you will be coming!

We encourage newcomers (and everyone!) to arrive with enough time to get settled.  Our services begin at the times they are scheduled.  We are always happy to find folks a seat whenever you arrive, but it is easier with a few minutes to spare.  :-)
