To a more perfect union we still aspire, right?

This weekend, the United States celebrates a big anniversary.  Like any celebration, there are choices about what to celebrate, about what story to tell.  There is a version of every story that contains no wrong, that lifts up protagonists as singular and exceptional.  There are other versions that are more nuanced… capable of lifting all the good while also still being honest about the rest.

This morning’s service will invite you to consider all of it, to be present with this moment and how it is with you.  After all, healthy democracy makes room for authenticity.  Just as doubt is not the enemy of faith but rather its whetstone, so thoughtful questioning — even dissent — has long been a bedrock of democracy and pluralism.

This morning, we reach beneath the shiny veneer patriotism as we lean into some big questions together.  What is the connection between democracy and spirituality?  Why is democracy a core principle of Unitarian Universalism?  What does democracy ask of us, not only collectively but even as individuals?

Rev. Jason and Worship Associate Joshua Farber will help us kick off a new ‘big idea’ in words and music.  Indeed, to a more perfect union we still aspire…
