Among Aesop's fables is one where children are squabbling and a wisdom figure uses a bundle of sticks to show them the power of working together. A modern re-telling uses matches to tell the same story: one is easy to break, but a bundle is much stronger!
Much of what we're told about human nature is rooted in the individual. But we are social creatures by nature, as well. We rely on one another.
Naming human nature as individual (as is often done) exalts the value of individual freedom. Naming human nature also as social -- or interdependent -- exalts other values like responsibility and accountability. And the kind of joys that can only be found in community.
This morning's message will be offered by Rev. Jason and Hashim Benford, whose background in community organizing informs a deeply rooted approach to human nature.
