Worship: Why We Build Walls

“You were not born free.  But neither were you born to be a vessel of lies." -- Timothy Snyder

In the ancient stories, Hades - ruler of the underworld - keeps a firm boundary between the lands of the living and the dead.  In the musical Hadestown, Hades is a boss.  He asks his workers: "Why Do We Build the Wall?"  We wonder alongside those in the story: is the wall for keeping them out... or for keeping us in?  Walls are fascinating like that.  And who really are us and them anyway?

This morning, with help from some very talented youth actors, we'll pose the question: why do we build walls?  Physical walls, emotional walls.  Do our walls protect us, or limit us... or both?  Which walls do we need... and which have we maybe resigned to accept?
