When you and Adam talk, I hear you say 'Why?' Always 'Why?' You see things; and you say 'Why?' But I dream things that never were; and I say 'Why not?' I made the word 'dead' to describe my old skin that I cast when I am renewed. I call that renewal being born.
This quote comes from playwright George Bernard Shaw. The serpent in the Garden of Eden is speaking to Eve: "Why not be born again and again as I am, new and beautiful every time?"
It takes courage to be curious. Individual courage and collective courage. This morning, we honor the breaking line between what is and what can yet be. We do so mindful of Memorial Day, a day when we are called to recognize deep commitment and deep sacrifice, and also the call of the conscience. What is patriotism these days anyway? Let's get beneath the noise...
