“What are your Worship Services like? Is it easy to participate?”
The Worship Service would be relatively familiar to anyone who has attended a church service before. Members of our “Welcome Team” are always ready to greet visitors, answer questions and help them feel at home. It’s very easy to participate!
In the Sanctuary, you will be given an “Order of Service” (bulletin or program) to follow the flow of events. The service generally includes a welcome, a call to worship, hymns, choral music (if the choir is singing), a “conversation with the children,” an offertory, readings, a sermon, more singing, and a benediction.
Our children usually stay in the Sanctuary through the ‘children’s conversation,’ and then they leave the service to go to their Religious Education (RE) classes. Your children would be welcome to join them for class, or stay in the service with you.
Most services are led by our minister. However, once a month during Fall and Winter, and every week during July and August, services are coordinated by members of our Religious Services Team. Because we are a faith community that encourages the ministry of all, members (and sometimes invited guests) lead those services. These services sometimes follow a less traditional format, particularly in the summer months. Please refer to our newsletter for this month’s Worship schedule.

“Are you Christians?
Historically, Unitarianism and Universalism emerged from the ferment of the protestant Reformation; the lineage of our faith is rooted in the Judeo-Christian tradition. However Unitarian Universalism as it is practiced today (Unitarians and Universalists merged in 1961 to form our current denomination) is a faith community open to the wisdom from all of the world’s great religious traditions. We welcome all people to join us here in our communal spiritual journey grounded in conversation with tradition, our personal experience of the Holy, and respect for each other.
For more information on Unitarian Universalist history, please follow the link (from our home page) to the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), which is our denominational body.
"Why are you called a “Society” and not a church?”
The term Society is used (as it is in the Quaker tradition) to connote an intentionally gathered communal body. We use that term rather than church as it signals our openness to people who come from spiritual traditions other than Christian.
“Can I meet with your Minister to discuss my faith questions?”
Generally, Reverend Greene encourages you to take a first step and come to a worship service or visit us during office hours and pick up some brochures and information. We offer a monthly forum called “So What,” (‘so what’ does it mean to be a Unitarian Universalist?) after services for people to come and speak with the Minister and learn more about Unitarian Universalism and membership here. Please check the newsletter for the schedule. Reverend Greene meets by appointment with members and friends of our community to discuss faith matters; an appointment can be scheduled by calling our office.
“Does your Minister do weddings or child dedications or funerals?"”
Rev. Greene generally performs these services only for active Members and Friends of the Society – for families with whom she has a personal connection. If you are looking for an Officiant, we do keep an active list of Ministers and Justices of the Peace who perform services locally. Give us a call or send an email, and we’ll be happy to share it with you.
“Can I rent your Sanctuary for my wedding?
Do you have gathering space for rent for larger events?"
Yes, as long as the calendar is open. Please follow the link to RENTALS on this web page (to your left, in the black menu bar) for detailed information.
