This gentle yoga practice is intended for people of any level of experience. Certified instructor Jen Seymour completed her teacher training with Ana Forrest in 2009. Since then she has taught large and small classes in a variety of settings. She has worked with all ages and abilities including those with unique challenges. In her classes, Jen unites intelligent pose sequencing with compassion and humor. Believing that yoga is truly for every-body, she challenges her students to understand and work with their unique strengths and limitations, helping her students to fulfill their potential both on and off the mat.
In every yoga class…
- It is up to the teacher to provide clear and precise instruction, intelligent assists (verbal or physical) and an appropriate environment in which her students can practice. She should also make an effort to provide alternatives or modifications for yoga poses that may not be appropriate for all students.
- It is up to the student to listen to their body, be aware of their limitations, and honor the uniqueness that is their yoga practice. It is important that each individual do the yoga practice that they are capable of today and to make smart choices for themselves about what poses are safe and possible.
“Online” yoga is a unique experience. It gives us the power and ability to join and participate in a time and place that would otherwise make group yoga impossible. It also offers unique challenges. I cannot make hands on adjustments as we go. I cannot always see clearly to offer specific feedback. I cannot affect the environment in which you do your practice from home. And the connection that we make as student and teacher, and as a class is different than the one we can make when we are all breathing and moving in a room together.
If you are breathing and feeling your body, you are doing yoga. Any bendy-twisty-pretzel moves are just variations on the basic theme.
Yoga should never hurt. Sensations of stretch, interesting sensations and intense sensations are normal. Pain, however, is a sign that you should stop what you are doing. If you are ever in pain, the first thing you must do is stop. Once you have gotten out of pain, you can re-evaluate and either re-enter the pose, modify it or join us again after we have moved on. If you have a particular limitation or information that I should know, please reach out to me and I will do my best to offer you options and help you to tailor your yoga practice. Medical conditions, old or current injuries or traumas (knee or hip replacements, other surgeries) and anything else that might have an impact on your practice are all good pieces of information for me to have.
