This production looks at Shakespeare’s most-read work, focusing on the theme of parenting and guidance, and emphasizing the whirlwind of voices that push and pull at the star-crossed lovers, drive them into hiding, and eventually prove their downfall.

Although – as the prologue reminds us – the play is truly about two households, most readings and productions of Romeo and Juliet focus on the teenagers of the play’s title.  And because the world of the teenager is by definition defined by tension between the family unit and the pull of the world beyond it, parenting is unsurprisingly a major theme in Shakespeare’s play – one presented both directly, through the strife, stress, and succor of the heads of the “two households”, and by proxy, through the characters of Friar and Nurse, and of Romeo’s cousins and friends, who cite their own struggles and dissatisfaction with the status quo of the feuding families and their values, and push Romeo and Juliet to act accordingly.

The cast explores the various and often conflicting messages and influences which we, as a culture and society, inflict upon our rising generations, and brings this to the forefront on the stage.  The resulting performances will both criticize and contextualize the clash of a variety of parenting and counseling styles, from misguided but well-intentioned helicopter parenting to the ill-fated advice of mentors, confidants, and friends, which drive Romeo and Juliet to their untimely deaths
